For all the Mutant X fans who've wanted to know the real reason Lauren Lee Smith (Emma deLauro) left Mutant X, Lauren herself finally answered the age-old question during a Q&A session at the L4 Event in London last month. Here's an excerpt:

Claire Mcbuffy: Mutant X. Your character left kind of unexpectedly. Um, and there’s a lot of rumour about how you left and why you left, I don’t know if you’re allowed to talk about it or not?
Lauren Lee Smith: Sure.
Mcbuffy: What exactly…
Lauren: I haven’t been on that show for years. I can say whatever I want!
Mcbuffy: Oh, that’s cool. What happened with your character? Did you leave or…?
Lauren: I did. Yeah.
Mcbuffy: You did. It was your choice.
Lauren: Yeah. It was, it was my choice. Um, I had done 44 episodes, um, and that’s a lot! A lot of…
Mcbuffy: It wasn’t the best show in the world…
Lauren: And it wasn’t the best show in the entire world. The expectations for the show were fantastic. And going into the show they had some really great ideas. And then half way through our budget went from like here *indicates high* to here *indicates REALLY low* And it just got… And they kept asking like, they kept asking me if I would wear less and less clothing in every episode. I was like yeeeah, I mean…yeah. When there’s not much else happening, going on in the show. And if you have to start…*Puts on a voice* Maybe if you start to wear a bikini throughout the whole thing we can get more people watching.
Anne Ramsey: Wow, did they really start doing that?
Lauren: Yeah. It was pretty crazy. So I was kind of like…It was a mutual thing. They were very nice about letting me go.
Mcbuffy: Well that’s good.
Lauren: Yeah, yeah. No hard feelings.
Mcbuffy: Well you and Ada…umm, I've forgotten his name. John?
Lauren: John Shea.
Mcbuffy: John Shea were kind of like the best things about the show, and you both left at the same time.
Lauren: Yeah, John was sort of in the same boat I was. We were both lead to believe we were…
Mcbuffy: I think you were both too good for the show, to be honest with you.
Lauren: Oh. *Laughs*
Mcbuffy: From a non fan-girl perspective. I think you were. You were the best thing about it. You had the weight of the show.
Lauren: Right. Well, quite honestly I had the strongest power. Sorry! But like I could have kicked everyone’s ass! So like… *Laughs*
Mcbuffy: That was the only sort of disappointing thing about you going, was the fact that they sort of started going to a dark place with your character.
Lauren: Right, and they kind of got stuck.
Mcbuffy: And it was interesting to see where it was going. And then of course you both left.
Lauren: Right. It was time. It was time to move on.

Many thanks to Claire McBuffy for reporting the answer!

Over the past month, I have contacted some of the terrific actors who guest-starred on Mutant X to ask them what they remembered of their experiences while working on the show. Though it has been a few years since they appeared on Mutant X, several of these actors have kindly taken the time out of their busy schedules to answer me. I'll share their responses here.

Noah Danby: He played the mutating ursine feral Michael Ward/The Beast in the episode "Whose Woods These Are."

How are you Nadia? Well let me see. YOur right that was a while ago. I remember being very hot and very tired when I had to get up in the morning. You see, along with the makeup people, I was the first one on set by about 4 hours. That's how long it took to do the makeup. But once the makeup was on ... what a blast! The cast were so fun and the crew were very hard working. It made for a very enjoyable place to work. As far as taking on the role of the beast....Without blah blah blahing about the prep I did. Let's just say it was a lot of work that paid off in the end and I was rewarded with something that I am very proud of. Glad to hear you enjoyed it...that makes it even more gratifying. All the best, Noah.

Andrew Kenneth Martin: He played the 'vampire' mutant Caleb Mathias in the episode "Lazarus Syndrome."

Hi Nadia My experience on the show was excellent thank you even though it was a long time ago. I actually got friendly with the cast and attended many social functions with them. If was a big crew and fun to work with. Since there is alot of action you can only imagine the preparation that takes place for each fight sequence. I had the opportunity to fight both victor and the blonde girl???? each a great physical draining experience. All in all one of the better gigs I have done. Hope you enjoyed it and hope this finds you well. akm

Jonas Chernick: He played the fire-starting mutant Josh at the beginning of the episode "The Future Revealed."

Hello Nadia. It has been a few years, yes, but I do remember my experience quite well. It was a joy working on Mutant X. My scene took us half of one day to shoot, and I spent much of that time discussing the "business" with Victoria Pratt. She's a lovely woman, and was very generous and kind, and we talked about Los Angeles, agents, Sci-Fi shows, etc. I also have fond memories of the crew - they were all very professional and helpful and made me feel very welcome. My scene had some great pyrotechnic affects, and there was a lot of fire explosions on set, which was neat - I'd never seen anything like that before. All in all, it was a very pleasant morning. Hope that answers your question. Cheers, Jonas Chernick

David Lipper: He played the very nervous crime accountant-turned-witness Vic Morelli in the season 2 episode "Once Around."

Hey Nadia, I had a lot of fun on Mutant X. I'm friends with Vicky Pratt and Victor, so it was nice to hang out with them for the week.

Tom McCamus: Tom and his wife Chick Reid will be staging a reading of Albee's play The Goat in Ontario Canada on the 10th.

For the Mutant X fans who've wondered why head writer Howard Chaykin left Mutant X after the first season, Chaykin spoke a little about the subject in an interview with Suicide Girls last month. Here's an excerpt:

Howard Chaykin: I had a television career that hit the shoals in the early 2000s. I decided I didn’t want to go back. I felt it was time to leave television and become a human being again.
Daniel Robert Epstein: I thought you left Mutant X. Is that not true?
HC: I didn’t quit. I was fired.
DRE: Do you want to talk about why?
HC: No, not especially. It was a pleasant experience while it lasted. It wasn’t a pleasant experience at that point. Frankly I was happy to have the job but I wasn’t all that upset to leave it. I was fired in June and the way television business works is that jobs become available in May and in November so that even if I wanted to go back to work all I could do was freelance and there wasn’t that much freelance. I decided that since I had all those months I might as well do some comics. So I pitched a book at DC Comics on a Friday and they bought it on a Tuesday. I did the book and I decided on the basis of that I wasn’t particularly interested in going back to television. I asked my wife how she would feel about it and she was delighted because she felt I had become a sort of unpleasant person and I never went back.

In response to a request for some of the song titles of the first season, I received an email from composer Lou Natale, who wrote the Mutant X theme song and the musical score for the first season!

Nadia,

Ep 101 : final fight scene "CHAIR ON A WIRE" performed by Chrome (or Krome?), composed by Tim Habibi
Ep 103: "OTHER SIDE OF ME" same as "CHAIR ON A WIRE."
Ep 115: I'm not 100% sure, but if it's at the end of the show, think it's "ALL OVER MY BODY", performed by SUGES, written by Adam Sugar.
All the music in 121 is written by me, so I presume you're asking about 122. I can't remember the scene you're talking about, but there are two possible songs in that episode. In the teaser (beginning of the show) there is a song called "CRIMEWAVE", performed by Empire XL, written by Laura Skene. Then toward the end of Act 1, there is "DON'T STOP," performed by M1, composed by Matteo Dimaria. Hope this helps. Keep listening!

I've updated the Music in Mutant X entry accordingly.

When asked on her official forum this month, the actress Ellen Dubin, who played the telepath Dr. Olivia Robinson in "In Between," had this to say about her time on Mutant X:

MUTANT X was a very challenging role for me. First of all, the timing was interesting on that show. I had flown in the night before from working on my series THE COLLECTOR on the red eye flight and got in at about six am and started working an hour or so later.
SO I was so exhausted.
The material is very technical - lots of medical terms that are dry and difficult. I was doing everything to stay awake and remember the dialogue. Very hard material.
My boots were extremely uncomfotable and high high high. Therefore, I was also dealing with that. But no one knew which is what my job entails.
I loved the set. The cast was very welcoming and they had a great time on the show.
I loved being part of a show like that. What a beautiful cast to look at too!
